Anyone who knows me knows about my severe addiction to magazines. A couple of weekends ago I actually dedicated a good ten hours to catching up on the pile of them that accumulated beside our bed! Living here, in the country of cheap magazine subscriptions is definitely a bad thing for someone like me.
Playing on the web and doing random searching today I found the most fabulous blog called Glossy Sheen. This blog looks at some of the amazing spreads from magazines in the 80s and 90s – ads and all!
The scans from Dolly magazine in the 1990’s bought back SO many memories. Including one of my favorite covers… this one of Alison Brahe!

My magazine love started with mum buying me Smash Hits in 1987 and then I also progressed on to TV Hits. I would sometimes also buy various American magazines where the different ads fascinated me. On school holidays during 1991 I bought my first Dolly Magazine. It was a red and orange cover and I haven’t been able to find an image of it anywhere. But doing some searches, I found some other covers.
I loved this issue – free INXS single that was a transparent blue record!
It is amazing how these covers bring back so many memories of counting down each month until each issue was released and reading it from back to front and over and over again. I had them all in order on my bookshelves and they then went down to the garage (much to dad’s chagrin) for a few years until I got rid of them. I cannot believe they went to the tip… now I could have made some good money on eBay for them! They were all in mint condition and you could still smell the Impulse inserts through the pages.
Dolly was an amazing magazine at the time – from the annual model contest to amazing 50 words or less competitions. I once won a huge Red Earth gift pack and thought it was the best thing ever. I don’t know if they are quite the same any more but I am sure they still promote Maybelline Great Lash mascara as the only mascara I would ever need… and I will admit I was sucked in for a little while to those claims!
