The commute this morning was probably one of the worst times getting to work I have experienced since I arrived and yet, it was still better than my old Melbourne Connex experiences.
There was a massive signal failure on the A and C line and then I read somewhere else that there was also a broken train track. This meant absolute dismay this morning. I checked the MTA Twitter feeds before I left (I do this every morning!) and they said there were small delays. When they say that it normally means that you wouldn’t notice the difference. How opposite it was this morning – the morning I decided to load up with about 10kgs of bags/books and my laptop!
In the end I was stuck underground at the stuffy paint peeling hub of the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station for 35 minutes this morning. The worst part? There was no communication from the MTA as to what was happening and as there is no cell phone or 3G coverage in the subway we knew absolutely nothing. This is rare for NYC Transit as normally the minute you are there for even 30 seconds longer than you should be, they let you know what is happening. The first three trains that came through were so packed I couldn’t get on them with my load of stuff. The C train wasn’t running at all so we had all the C people on the A train and us lot at Hoyt who could not get on either, were left waiting!
My only blessing was that the rat I usually see walking along the train tracks in the morning was not there and everyone just stood around.
This is how it looked after about 15 minutes of waiting before another two G trains came through the station –
