No… this is not what you are thinking. For this post, a very New York evening does not mean a gorgeous restaurant, stroll through Madison Square Park or finding a vintage book for a great price.
For this post we are talking – air conditioning.
After the stifling humidity last weekend, I could not stand the thought of living without an air conditioner any longer. We were meant to buy one when we were in Albany and had a car but we couldn’t fit it in our Mazda. We thought we would be fine to leave it for another couple of weeks. Um. No. I think Bill would’ve run away if he had to put up with my moaning and groaning and I couldn’t get away with “I think we should have icy poles for dinner!” any longer.
I googled last Saturday afternoon to find any recommendations for AC installers in Brooklyn and found out about Vlad. He is one sought after guy. This is his website and wow – look at the Yelp reviews. I was sold.
We gave him a call Saturday afternoon. he didn’t call us back straight away I wasn’t worried. I knew he would have had a stack of requests after the extreme heat. So on Monday I emailed him. We wanted him to install an AC and do our ceiling fan installation as well. He wrote back and said “I don’t do ceiling fans – sorry!” Desperate for coolness I replied back “Can you still do the AC?” I didn’t hear back straight away.
On Tuesday I told Bill to call him – he did and we were all penciled in for a Wednesday 3pm appointment. I had to email him our full request with what we wanted. Yes – Vlad actually goes and does the purchase of the AC FOR YOU!!!! Being in the city this is a great service because we would have to hire a car big enough ourselves, try and find the AC we want, try and get a park and then try and get the box into the apartment etc. So on Tuesday at 5.30 I emailed him with our requested AC, our address and time we confirmed. That night I set about doing three loads of laundry. It was 8pm and I was in my jammies, had all the washing over the bed so I was going to sit down, fold away, watch TV and relax and do the dishes later. Bill cooked an amazing dinner so it had been a lovely night. It was then the phone rang. It was Vlad! “I can come and do it now!” So with that, I set about like crazy trying to fold piles of washing, get the room in order and get the dishes done. Bill moved our stuff out of the way of the window so Vlad would have a clear area. He rang from Home Depot to confirm the AC we wanted and at 8.30 he was at our door. By 9pm our air conditioner was running and Vlad was giving us filter cleaning advice on his way out. NEW YORK SERVICE! He was amazing! We didn’t have to take time off, he was in and out in no time and did everything for us for a reasonable fee and in reality, I didn’t even have to get off the couch! There is always someone, somewhere in the city who can do something you need – at any hour of the day. It is amazing and the AC is just beautiful. What I love the best is it is SO QUIET. There is no need to yell over it. We should be able to test it out this weekend as it looks like the humidity is back and the high temperatures are here to stay. I’m not in panic stations mode about it now – bring on Summer!
This is how the AC looks behind our curtains (I didn’t want it to be the focus on the room and to stand out) –
When we have the AC on, I just need to pull the curtains back –
