Blizzard 2010

Posted on December 27, 2010December 27, 2010 by Jenelle

On Sunday morning at about 10.30am, snow started falling in Brooklyn. By 7am Monday the snow had stopped and we were left with some unbelievable scenes here in the city.

While I have experienced a few snow storms now, this was a blizzard. Basically we had hurricane force winds, with snow, in absolutely freezing (well below freezing!) temperatures. It was frightening to say the least. The wind howling and causing the snow to hit the window meant you were really experiencing mother nature. Then, in some areas, people were experiencing thundersnow and also lightning. It was a crazy night to say the least.

I was watching live coverage on TV which was so exciting. I LOVE live storm coverage and this was no exception! –

Visibility was so bad outside. Here is a view from our kitchen window when there was a lull –

10pm - from our kitchen window

The wind was blowing snow onto the window in the kitchen and it was something I had never seen before. We are four floors up and getting hit this hard –

Bill still had to go into work so we got up this morning to find that this storm has been so brutal for some reason we have no hot water or heat. Ugh. So I packed Bill his lunch while he rugged up with layers upon layers. Then we went outside and this is what greeted us –

Through our front door

Wayne, one of maintenance guys had just started snow blowing a bit of walking space out the front of our building. Snow had also drifted into the building –

This is a car out the front of our building –

This car is not going anywhere

These fences are chest high – it was so peaceful and serene but oh so cold!

Because of the snow drifts some areas and cars had no snow on them while others were totally under cover –

I don’t know how our neighbours will be getting out of their house!

Winter wonderland

We were so lucky to be able to walk out of our building –

As it was so snowy, it was hard to walk on the snow so if you had to walk you were forced to walk on the road. Which was ok as there were no cars anywhere!

Fresh, powdery, fluffy and freezing

If you want to experience the brutality of this blizzard, here is a video I made when the wind wasn’t too bad! My voice is weird as my teeth were chattering…!
