We have had a positively perfect January 1!
Last night there were a lot of parties in our building. Our apartments are small and it sounded like there were 50 people next door and then down the hall it sounded like an were were living in an actual nightclub. Everything was quiet by about 1.30 so definitely no complaints!
After a sleep in, I watched the Rose Bowl Parade on TV which was absolutely amazing. One thing that America does extremely well is street parades! Marching bands and floats are their specialty… I think it all comes down to amazing community involvement. After lunch we walked down the road to the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) to see the King’s Speech.
Good points of this –
Only $7.50 before 3pm.
Cute cinemas.
No crazies which is a plus because I have found this to be the case in many other NY cinemas.
Just walking distance from our apartment.
Bad points –
There is still way too much uncleared snow for my liking. I am terrified of slipping in the icy slush and so walking is more stressful than relaxing.
The movie was fantastic and it was a pleasure to watch. I still relate Guy Pearce to being on Neighbours and I can still remember the day I went out for dinner during a late night at work and Geoffrey Rush was strolling down Bourke Street beside me. So it was fun seeing them both together in this film.
This is what the cinemas looked like inside… nice!!
We then walked back along Lafayette to go to Mass. We were there really early but as soon as we headed into the foyer we heard over a loud speaker – “STAND UP AGAINST THE WALL! STAND UP AGAINST THE WALL!” Of course, we had to go outside and see what was going on… the policeman seemed pretty sure about the nature of this guy and was screaming at him to throw his jacket on the ground and then stand up against the wall. The guy would not follow his instructions and the policeman had to get quite physical to get him to stand still. Within 2 minutes max there were 6 other police cars and 12 police there to help the lone policeman… it was just like the movies! Other parishioners were in shock at what was going on but just by how serious they were taking this guy, I don’t think he was a savoury character!
Here I am… deliberately not smiling because I wanted to seem like a concerned resident when really I was thinking this would be perfect for the start of Daily Image 2011… a little thing a few of us a doing this year on Flickr.
After Mass we headed around the corner to Black Iris, our favourite little local Lebanese food place for a nice little dinner. Then we dropped into the deli for some milk and ice-cream for dessert and here I am, in my jammies, watching the Ice Hockey at 7pm!
With the dishes done, oven cleaned and a total chill day… this may just be perfection!
