I have started volunteer work at the Brooklyn Public Library working the front desk as a welcome desk ambassador. This means I help people get to where they have to go in the library, answer questions about the building, give directions and ensure that people are guided in the right direction to get the information they need. As soon as you enter the front door, the main desk is right there – so it is a great way to assist patrons the minute they walk in the front door.
I took some photos of the outside the library – such a grand building!
How it looks from afar –
Nice, long library hours!
Not just any public library…
View from the front of library –
I still get a kick out of seeing school buses here!
Inscription and the book return box –
The details on the building are beautiful –
And look – the library even has this fabulous video where you can see a lot of what happens there!
The library serves 2.5 million people, is the fifth largest public library service in the US and has the highest program attendance out of all library services in the country. There are 58 branches and a bookmobile.
Here is my local branch that is just around the corner –
The Central Branch is amazing. As a public library they have an amazing array of programs and facilities and it works – while I was there for my training (on a Tuesday afternoon) the library was bustling with so many people. From college students, to job seekers, mums with their children, researchers – it was fantastic!
There are so many volunteering opportunities here – hopefully I can get involved in teaching some classes or some project based work in the future as well. Volunteering is so rewarding – especially in such a thriving place!
