It was 9.30 on Saturday morning when we were already on our way into Manhattan.
Bill heard about a mega cookbook sale at the James Beard Foundation on 12th Street. They exist to promote the culinary arts through various awards and scholarships. They have this cookbook sale once every two years and basically it is open slather on their collection with a majority of the books being $1, $3 and $5.
We got out at 14th Street and was greeted by this –
Everyone knows how l love lining up… not.
We finally made it to the front door and had to wait some more –
It was like we were entering a miners cottage from the 1800’s! This was inside the front door. I have no idea what it is –
Then we got in a little further. We were now in a queue to get up the narrow, rickety staircase!
We then made it a little further up –
Then we were in!
It was a series of small rooms with tables and books everywhere. There was not a lot of room and it was quite uncomfortable. It was actually quite crazy!
Inside the Library –
We got through the back of the room with a 1980s copy of Good Housekeeping’s Great American Recipes and a reprint of the Boston School of Cooking Recipe Book from the 1800s. As we neared the back we peered over into the kitchen area. They were selling cutlery and various bits and pieces from their kitchen!
We got some lovely serving spoons for 50c and also a nice big baking pan for $3!
It was a somewhat claustrophobic adventure… and seeing the people leaving with boxes of books was entertaining. I don’t know how they could be bothered – I don’t think I am much of a doorbuster shopper!
