With all of my belongings safe, sound and in one piece I realised I better call home and let everyone know I arrived – I was absolutely melting in the apartment with the heat and humidity and all I wanted was the coldest shower possible. I could not for the life of me work out the taps (amazing how the simplest tasks are impossible when overtired) so I had probably one of the hottest showers EVER and just gave up and collapsed in bed by about 1am.
I awoke out of slumber at 7am, mainly due to my bedroom being way too light at that time of the morning! Though I was wide awake and feeling a million bucks!. It didn’t actually feet like I was in New York as it was SO quiet and that is the complete opposite of every other time I have been here. As I had no food I quickly got dressed and decided to see if I could find any breakfast as I remembered, from when I visited in January, there was a Starbucks a couple of blocks away. I actually think at this time I was in a complete daze and not really comprehending where I was or what I was doing! I actually found my local Dunkin’ Donuts and wow – it was really bopping for a Sunday morning! I joined the queue and as I was nearing the register I realised I wanted a juice from the fridge… so I ran over and.. then realised there must be an unwritten rule… you leave the line, you go straight back to the end. Because no-one was letting me in! I was on cloud 9 so seriously, I could have ended up 100-people back and it wouldn’t have mattered. As the Dunkin’ Donuts here was so small, everyone was sharing tables and everyone was so… friendly?! I felt 100% better with some food (albeit greasy!) and did another walk around the block, with a shop up at my local Duane Reade. I had to head back to the apartment as I had a Fresh Direct order on the way.
Now this was my fridge before Fresh Direct –
I’ve had a few people ask about what is Fresh Direct. Basically it is your groceries home delivered. Being the organisational freak I am, I pre-ordred my first big shop the Wednesday before I left. It is perfect for here (especially to go without carrying heavy goods!) and with a delivery charge of about $5, reasonable prices and a ‘big supermarket’ range of goods – it is the perfect solution to continually buying ‘bits and pieces’ from corner delis and smaller shops.
My order was due to arrive at 2pm and at 1.30pm the buzzer on my apartment rang.. early! Yay! The delivery guys carry the goods right into your apartment.. this was a better pampering experience than any pedicure!! Here is how the boxes looked –
And then unpacked –
And I have a whole lot of other pics here that you can view.
I can also state that the Fresh Direct delivery guys were my first apartment visitors!
By the time I unpacked all the groceries and kept unpacking my own belongings much of Sunday was gone and I was more than overdue for a big sleep. It was a lovely way to ease into moving and other than the tiredness – I felt great! Jet lag?! What is that?! Don’t worry… I’d be sure to find out later in the week!
