…back to our Australian holiday posts!
After the exhausting night at the football, Saturday and Sunday were so relaxing. Aunty Shirl and Nana came for a girls lunch, while Bill went to the local football for a while with dad.
On Sunday night we went out for dinner on the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant. We had a walk around Crown Casino and the Promenade and then waited for our ‘restaurant’ to arrive.
I love trams and the restaurant is something you always see going around the streets. It was something we had never done before so with us over for a visit, it seemed like the perfect excuse.
The tram route took us through South Melbourne, then down along St Kilda Esplanade, then back up St Kilda Road, through the city, up to Nicholson Street, then down Bourke Street and back to Crown. It was so relaxing as you sit, eat and watch the city go by.
We both had the kangaroo as a starter (it was delicious) and then Bill got the beef main and I got the chicken with risotto. Dessert was yummy with a white chocolate mousse and sticky date pudding and Bill loved the Australian cheese platter.
The meals are all prepared in a tiny little galley in the middle of the tram. It is amazing to know that a chef can prepare all those meals in such a tight space – she did an amazing job.
At one stop, dad was out talking to one of managers and mentioning that we had a native New Yorker on the tram, he came in and serenaded Bill with New York, New York!

All in all, it was a lovely experience and we are pleased to say we did it. It is all inclusive so the only thing is that as non-drinkers, it is an expensive night. It would be fantastic if they had a non-alcoholic option. But seriously, we had a lovely time and it was surprisingly easy to eat on the tram. I had visions of drinks spilling and meals wobbling.
It is well worth doing and a lovely way to see Melbourne at night!
