I haven’t been to Ohio – yet. I cannot wait to go sometime soon – it is the one state that I am kind of obsessed with. Note – Bill was actually born in Ohio!
It has been one of those places that I have always dreamed of going. When I won the Green Card I always thought that if I managed to get a dream job in Ohio, I’d go there for sure. No questions asked.
I loved Columbus because that is where Family Ties was set. I have loved Cleveland because of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and because even though I never watched the Drew Carey Show, I absolutely loved the Cleveland Rocks theme song –
Then of course, there is the Ohio State University Marching Band who are absolutely amazing –
My ‘thing’ for Cincinnati started when I first heard the Big & Rich song Comin’ To Your City. The lines that always stuck was –
Well we blew threw Cincinnati
And we all got really happy
Grabbed a bowl of that Skyline Chili along the way
I’ve also seen Skyline Chili on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and knew I just had to try this meal. If we couldn’t go to Ohio, we’d bring Ohio to us!
When I was working our our meal plan for this week, I suggested Bill make Skyline Chili for our Sunday meal where we could eat meat. Mission was set and he found a recipe to try. He used the About.com Skyline Chili recipe and the apartment smelt amazing while it was cooking! You can see in the recipe, it has some pretty interesting ingredients.
This is how it looks if you get it at the original Skyline Chili place –
The difference with Skyline Chili is how it is served. Firstly, it is on pasta. Then you have all these different ways of eating it. When they say ‘with cheese’ they mean piled high with grated cheese and it actually looks like more cheese than spaghetti. I went for 4-way, Bill went for 5-way –
1-way: just the chili
2-way: chili served over spaghetti
3-way: chili, spaghetti, and grated Cheddar cheese
4-way: chili, spaghetti, cheese, and onions
5-way: chili, spaghetti, cheese, onions, and beans
When I took my first taste I realized I vaguely knew the flavor – from pastitsio – the Greek pasta dish. It is very similar to the meat sauce used in that and then, I found out that the owner of Skyline Chili is Greek – so you can definitely taste that influence. This is an AWESOME dish – especially during winter!

This was such a great Sunday lunch. I cannot wait until the next time we have Skyline Chili where we will hopefully actually be in Cincinnati!
